Indian Navy Successfully Test-fires BrahMos Supersonic Cruise Missile

A BrahMos supersonic cruise missile was successfully test-fired from the Indian Navy’s frontline guided missile destroyer, INS Mormugao, officials announced on Sunday. The missile firing showcased the Indian Navy’s firepower at sea.

INS Mormugao, the latest guided-missile destroyer, achieved a direct hit during its inaugural BrahMos supersonic cruise missile firing, a Navy official confirmed. Both the ship and its powerful weapon are indigenous, serving as symbols of self-reliance and the Indian Navy’s strength at sea.

The specific location of the missile test-firing has not been disclosed. BrahMos Aerospace Pvt Ltd, a joint venture between India and Russia, manufactures the supersonic cruise missiles capable of being launched from submarines, ships, aircraft, or land platforms.

Flying at a speed of 2.8 Mach, or nearly three times the speed of sound, the BrahMos missile is also being exported by India. In January last year, India finalized a USD 375 million deal with the Philippines to supply three batteries of the missile.
